There’s a narrative, but it’s mostly inconsequential because the film primarily serves as a platform for Gosling and numerous stunt performers to showcase their impressive skills. Penned by Drew Pearce and loosely inspired by the 1980s television show featuring Lee Majors, it kicks off just before Colt’s disastrous 12-story fall.
Colt finds himself hospitalized with a fractured spine, his career abruptly halted, and his budding romance with camera operator Jody Moreno (Blunt) unexpectedly cut short. His dream of going to a beach with Jody to engage in spontaneous adventures quickly fades away.
David Leitch, the director behind films like Atomic Blonde and Bullet Train, has a deep understanding of the stunt works. Teaming up with Drew Pearce, who co-wrote Leitch’s Hobbs & Shaw, he infuses The Fall Guy with adrenaline-pumping action sequences.
What sets ‘The Fall Guy’ apart is not its simplistic storyline, but its two highly renowned lead actors – Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.
The backdrop offers ample opportunities for comedic moments to develop. The action sequences are authentic, with minimal use of computer-generated imagery or special effects to orchestrate them.
Yet, the action fades into the background as Ryan and Emily’s on-screen chemistry sparkles and shimmers. Their playful banter, flirtatious exchanges, and witty digs are immensely enjoyable, almost making you forget that it’s all unfolding amidst intense action.
The film is filled with references and nostalgic nods to the 80s and 90s, evoking a warm feeling in your heart. However, the second half and the buildup to the climax feel hurried. Nevertheless, the cast delivers solid performances overall.
