“The Idea of You” stars Anne Hathaway as a recently divorced gallerist who finds herself caught in a whirlwind romance with a young pop star. Despite the age difference causing a media frenzy, their connection is undeniable.

Packed with charm, wit, and a surprising emotional punch, “The Idea of You” is a delightful reminder that love can strike at any time.

Directed by Michael Showalter, known for his previous success with The Big Sick, The Idea of You is a mature romantic drama boasting strong central performances that compensate for its predictable writing. It balances between emotional depth and uplifting storytelling with confidence.

The Plot

The Idea of You, brings a refreshing dose of romantic comedy without all the usual fluff. It’s a blend of sensuality, cheesiness, and the glitz of Los Angeles, offering a much-needed escape from reality.

The story revolves around Solene, a single mother portrayed by Hathaway, navigating through a messy divorce initiated by her ex-husband’s infidelity. At 40, Solene is focused on her career as an art gallery owner and raising her teenage daughter, Izzy.

During a trip to Coachella with Izzy and her friends, Solene accidentally crosses paths with Hayes Campbell, the 24-year-old frontman of the globally popular boy band, August Moon.

Their unexpected encounter sparks a whirlwind romance that captures the attention of both the world and the media, leading to personal turmoil for Solene and her family.

Critics, including her ex-husband, criticize Solene for her age, labeling her a “cougar” and comparing her to Yoko Ono for supposedly causing rifts within the band.

Authenticity In Romance And Challenging Stereotypes

Despite its unconventional origins, The Idea of You isn’t your typical romantic movie you’d find on streaming platforms. There were rumors that the book, authored by Robinne Lee, drew inspiration from Harry Styles’ dating experiences.

While some characters, especially Soléne’s envious ex-husband, hint at the significant 16-year age difference between her and Hayes, the film doesn’t portray it as unsettling.

There’s authentic chemistry in the scene where Hayes surprises Soléne at her home while her daughter is away. Importantly, Soléne isn’t portrayed as someone overly submissive. She also avoids being depicted as a cliché bored housewife or someone trying to appear younger than she is, adding depth to the story.

The film also delves into more mature themes than expected; Soléne and Hayes’ relationship isn’t just surface-level antics but involves genuine conversations. A standout moment is when Soléne shares the story of her failed marriage — Hathaway shines with both charm and vulnerability, captivating yet subtly distant.

While another actor might have struggled in the role, Hathaway’s portrayal of Soléne helps normalize the central relationship despite the objections of other characters in the story.

Hathaway Shines In “The Idea of You”

In “The Idea of You,” Anne Hathaway’s acting steals the spotlight. She shares enjoyable moments with Galitzine, who also shows off his dance and singing skills. The movie takes a different path from the original book, and it seems to understand it’s a movie, especially when it comes to age-gap romances.

Even though Hathaway is 41, she doesn’t look much older than her 29-year-old co-star. This makes the age difference between their characters less noticeable. But Hathaway’s character, Solène, exudes allure, especially in New York when she unveils herself in a sheer dress after shedding her trench coat.

With Hathaway leading, “The Idea of You” finds its rhythm, sometimes hinting at deeper themes but ultimately settling for being a satisfying watch, especially for a flight.

One interesting aspect of the film is how it tackles the different ways society judges age-disparate relationships. It suggests that if the genders were swapped, people might view the relationship differently. While a sixteen-year age gap might seem like a lot, in the world of movies, it doesn’t create much of a stir.

Connections Between “The Idea of You” and Taylor Swift’s Album

Coincidentally, “The Idea of You” follows closely after Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” where she suggests that her devoted fan base has complicated her love life. While their themes may align spiritually, the film’s storyline appears to be influenced as much by one-sided relationships as it is by a commentary on them.

Anne Hathaway’s performance gains additional depth in this context. She has experienced the intense scrutiny of fame before, and yet, she has found a way to navigate beyond it.
